January 12–13 Workshop Recap
Over the past two days, the Sociology, Anthropology and HDFS department took a major step forward in campus wellness by hosting an ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) workshop. This wasn’t just a seminar—it was an intensive, two-day commitment to learning "suicide first aid" and life-saving intervention techniques.
We were thrilled to see such a diverse group of participants, including:
• Residential Life Staff: Our front-line team members who support students where they live.
• Sociology Faculty & Staff: Bringing academic expertise into practical, real-world application.
• Students: The next generation of leaders and advocates for mental health.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to The Family Tree and our expert facilitators, Skasa Rideau and Ken Brown. Their guidance provided our team with the tools to recognize when someone is at risk and the confidence to intervene and keep them safe.
We’re Just Getting Started!
To ensure our campus remains a proactive and supportive environment, we will be hosting two more ASIST trainings throughout the remainder of this semester. Whether you are faculty looking to support your students or a student wanting to make a difference in your peer group, we encourage you to join us for an upcoming session. To schedule your spot or inquire about the next dates, please reach out to Kristen Kahanek at Kristen.Kahanek@louisiana.edu.
Together, we are building a "suicide-safer" community at UL Lafayette. Geaux Cajuns!
